about amy
personal:
I love Jesus and He has saved me and changed my life. I’ve been married to my amazing husband Thomas for 19 years. We have 3 amazing kids and 1 rambuctious cockapoo. My loves include writing, handlettering, reading, travel, exploring, nature, spending time on my deck in deep thought and prayer, fitness, finding bargains, gardening, bird watching, decorating rooms and making them feel cozy, singing, meeting new friends and enjoying great food. We are a multicultural family (American and Austrian) and just recently moved from our home of 18 years in Austin, TX to my hometown of Kansas City, Missouri.
professional:
Amy E. Mathews-Muttwill received her Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Missouri Kansas City (UMKC) and her Master of Music in vocal performance from University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). After her undergraduate work and completing her teaching certifications, Amy studied vocal performance, operetta and the German language while attending the American Institute of Musical Studies (AIMS) in Graz, Austria. While there, she auditioned for an opera company and was invited to sing the role of Atalanta in Handel’s Xerxes in Bremen, Germany the following year.
Upon her return to the U.S.A., she applied for and was granted an ambassadorial scholarship with the Plaza Rotary Club of Kansas City to study operetta abroad, which afforded her the opportunity to study German at the Goethe Institute in Frankfurt, Germany as well as attend a summer vocal workshop at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria and ultimately land her in Vienna, Austria for her post-graduate studies. While in Vienna, she was a chorus member with Theater an der Wien in their Klangbogen Festspiel singing in Leoncavallo’s lesser known La bohème and Massenet’s Don Quichotte and later went on tour throughout London, Switzerland and Liechtenstein with the Arnold Schoenberg Chor singing in the chorus of Haydn’s The Creation.
During this time, Amy worked with world renown opera coaches and voice teachers throughout Austria, taught ESL for major corporations like Porsche Bank based in Austria and held various positions teaching voice lessons and classes at the Austrian Elementary School and Vienna International School as well as co-directing the musical, Honk!, at the American International School — all while working as a student affairs coordinator with Webster University Vienna. It was at Webster where she met her husband, Thomas, and later married and relocated to the U.S. in Austin, TX.
Once in Austin, Amy became an active member of the Grammy Award Winning choral group, Conspirare, directed by Craig Hella-Johnson, worked as a soprano section leader with various Austin-area churches and guest soloed with the Round Rock Symphony and Austin Symphony while maintaining a thriving vocal studio out of her home in North Austin.
She also went on to pursue her Master of Music (Vocal) and worked closely with Professor John Nix as a graduate assistant and assistant professor where she co-authored peer-reviewed articles, Does Real-Time Visual Feedback Enhance Perceived Aspects of Choral Performance? and Chorister Perceptions of Real-Time Displays of Spectra in the Choral Rehearsal: A Feasibility Study.
Throughout her 18 years in Austin, she served as a worship leader, choir director for adults and children at various churches and soloist/section leader for various churches. She also consulted with church worship teams and worked with speakers helping them optimize their speaking voices.
Amy recently relocated with her family back to her hometown of Kansas City, Missouri. She is once again teaching privately out of her North Kansas City home as well as holding a teaching position with Faith Christian Academy as a choir teacher. She hopes to begin singing again soon here in the K.C. area.
